straight Tokyoites, drunk Osakans

Mieko Kawakami:

I was born in Osaka and have the Osaka dialect accent, which is very melodious. For example, during Buddhist incantations, Tokyoites read it straight, but Osakans sound almost drunk—or like they’re really feeling it. That kind of musicality affects how we think about things, and how melodic dialogues are spoken. We can’t separate music from it.
